Katey Hays, a 10 year old girl living in a timber logging camp in the 1930's, adopts a summertime goal of visiting the forbidden deep swamp where the sawyers work each day cutting the huge centuries-old cypress trees. She wangles a trip on a track inspection cart with a foreman, and miles deep in the swamp notices off in the distance an extraordinarily large cypress tree. When she learns that the entire forest will be cut down, along with the giant tree, she endeavors to save that one tree from being cut down. When her efforts meet with no favor, she vows to herself to somehow preserve at least the memory of the tree. But she has to somehow get back down into the deep, dark, forbidden swamp by herself to measure the height and girth of the tree, and perhaps sketch it. That is when the trouble begins. Various calamities befall her as she stubbornly persists. Katey's friend Andy, slightly older, aids and abets Katey's clandestine efforts. Her younger friend, Little Bit, counsels Katey on her behavior, and asks a lot of questions. This book is recommended for children learning about natural resources conservation.Littman, Jan is the author of 'Swamp Giant' with ISBN 9781593302344 and ISBN 1593302347.
