SUMMARY

Narelle Oliver is an Australian author-illustrator of a number of award-winning children¿s picture books including The Best Beak in Boonaroo Bay, Mermaids Most Amazing, Sand Swimmers and Home. Many of her titles have been published internationally. Narelle Oliver grew up in Toowoomba in the state of Queensland, Australia in a family who spent every spare moment pursuing visual arts¿especially photography, drawing and painting. A highlight of her childhood was regular trips into unusual countryside gathering ideas and material for various artworks. At the age of eight, Narelle was staying at her aunt¿s farm with brothers and cousins, when they discovered a large bird perched on a dead branch. Its body was still and pulled up tight, its eyes shut, and its feathers matched the bark perfectly. It looked for all the world like part of the branch and it seemed as if it could stay like that forever. And so began a lifelong fascination with camouflage and wildlife adaptation in general. Many of Narelle¿s picture books feature that theme. While studying for a Bachelor of Education degree, Narelle majored in design and printmaking and discovered the world of contemporary children¿s picture books. Then followed several years teaching at the Queensland School for the Deaf, living and breathing picture books and sign language, before beginning her first picture book, Leaf Tail, published in 1989. The linocut print medium, used in different combinations with paint, pencil and collage is a special feature of her illustrations. In particular, Narelle uses linocut to capture the patterns and textures of animals and their surroundings. After exploring the oak hickory forest and remnant prairie on a property belonging to friends in southern Illinois, Narelle was inspired to write and illustrate Twilight Hunt which celebrates the art and science of camouflage in this North American environment. Currently, Narelle lives in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia with her husband Greg, an environmental scientist, and children Jessie (17) and Liam (14) and dog Tashi (7).Oliver, Narelle is the author of 'Twilight Hunt ', published 2007 under ISBN 9781595721075 and ISBN 159572107X.
