AUTHOR

Bradford, Roark, Berry, Erick

SUMMARY

1929. Bradford's works of fiction and folklore were based on his childhood contacts with African-American preachers, musicians, and storytellers in his father's plantations. His first book, Ol' Man Adam An' His Chillun, was collected from stories first published in the World. The stories were then adapted by Marc Connelly into the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Green Pastures. Bradford also wrote novels which depicted the plight of African-Americans from a historical perspective, such as This Side of Jordan. The book begins: Bayou Rouge is a bayou that knows its manners. It stretches gracefully and beautifully along in front of the big house, keeping strictly between its banks and behaving itself when it is out where the white folks can see it. Not rigid and straight, like a cotton-chopping woman unexpectedly called in to help with the company, but with gentle lazy bends and curves, like a regular house girl who has been around white folks all her life.Bradford, Roark is the author of 'This Side of Jordan' with ISBN 9781417913022 and ISBN 1417913029.
