Ian Stewart is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick, where he is Director of the Mathematics Awareness Center Edwin Abbott Abbott was born in London on December 20, 1838. Educated at St. John's College in Cambridge, he was ordained in 1862 and three years later was appointed headmaster of the City of London School, where he served until 1889. Abbott was a celebrated teacher, inspiring hundreds of students in a wide range of disciplines, from Sanskit to chemistry. He was also a lifelong student of the classics, and a writer of some renown.
