I shouldn't admit this, but I really didn't write this book. I should accept whatever plaudits there are, but it seems vaguely criminal. One or more of the readers will say in a mumble, masked by paroxysms of laughter or a snicker, "I could have written this book. What a crock!" Yeah, you could have, but you didn't, mostly because you didn't know any of the people who actually live and breathe in it. I knew them, and like Van Gogh all I did was copy what I saw, though perhaps not as beautifully or creatively. There is no real creation in this book, only assembly and assessment; I hope you like it for what it is. Schools are families but bigger. Teachers are the parents and students are the children-only there are so many more of them and they have no natural bonds to one another. And you see them every work day. Imagine a situation in which you are a parent and you are responsible for six different hordes of "your own children" every day, one after the other, and further you are responsible for providing work for them at home, which is supposedly ministered by other parents who have their own agendas. It's a sloppy system that has worked nicely since time immemorial. That also is what the book is all about and how it works. I hope you find it funny and instructive.Hochstein, Bob is the author of 'Snapshots from the Classroom' with ISBN 9781413768862 and ISBN 1413768865.
