When Columba came to northern Scotland in the 6th century, Ninian, "a most reverend and holy man", had already established his church at Whithorn. Ninian was a Briton of royal birth who as a youth dedicated himself to the life of the Church. He studied in Rome and worked with St. Martin of Tours, in whose name he later founded his church, the first in Scotland. In the 12th century, Aelred, Bishop of Rievaulx, rendered this account of Ninian's life into Latin. It is one of the earliest descriptions of the life and miracles of this great Scottish saint.Aelred of Rievalux is the author of 'Saint Ninian' with ISBN 9780863151675 and ISBN 0863151671.
