Research Guide to Modern Irish Dramatists

This is a bibliography of bibliographies of one hundred and two Irish dramatists who wrote from the beginning of the Irish Dramatic Movement in 1899 to the present time. It aims at assisting scholars and students of Modern Irish Drama to find the most reliable bibliographical information on the dramatists of the period. Because only better-known playwrights have recently been the subject of bibliographical studies, this Guide includes all the modern Irish dramatists—ranging from J. M. Synge and Sean O'Casey to the lesser-known Seamus Byrne and Frank Carney. Even those authors who wrote only one play have been listed. The entries include descriptive annotations. The annotations are not evaluative, but descriptive and indicative of the content of the material they describe. Thus "Primary" signifies that the bibliography or checklist includes all the writings by the author, whether books or periodical contributions. "Primary First Editions" shows that all first editions or first publications are included, but not reprints or later editions. "Primary Books" indicates that no other form is included. "Secondary" means that the compiler has attempted to list all writings about the author, while "Secondary Selected" designates that the compiler has consciously omitted some writings.Mikhail, E.
