This report was requested & funded by the Safe Motherhood Group (SMG) which consists of rep. from agencies within HHS. Evidence was systematically reviewed on: (1) the prevalence & incidence of perinatal depression, (2) the accuracy of different screening instruments, & (3) the effectiveness of interventions for women screened as high risk for perinatal depression. Depression is one of the most common perinatal complications & that fairly accurate & feasible screening measures are available. Studies with larger sample sizes & a greater racial & ethnic mix are needed. Researchers also need to determine whether screening itself leads to better access to proven treatment & improved outcome relative to usual care.
