This collection of essays analyzes certain of the forms in which literate women expressed their reactions to the 1789 Revolution--forms structured by their experiences, writings, and interpretation of events. Some of the questions addressed are: Were literate women passive onlookers or active participants in the revolutionary drama? What was their attitude towards domesticity and the emerging ideology of separate spheres for men and women?
