The GIVE READING A CHANCE program is designed to help children establish a habit of reading daily. Of the few read-at-home programs currently available, this one is unique in several ways. First, GIVE READING A CHANCE is a year-long program, including summers. It has established criteria, & doesn't rely on a single community resource for its recognition programs. It has a built-in recognition system that gives students a fresh beginning every month. By rewarding on a monthly basis, & by giving rewards for accumulating read-at-home days, this program provides more effective methods for reaching the reluctant readers - the ones who really need help. The program can be adapted easily for use within a single classroom or throughout the school, & you can begin at any time during the year. Children receive daily reading slips, which parents sign saying that their child reads for 15 minutes at home. At the end of each month, students who read for 10 school days receive recognition for being a Top Read-at-Homer. Our mascots, Homer & his horse Page, help to make the ready to copy masters for forms, letters & prizes a lot more fun. A school can choose the rewards & incentives according to its philosophy, available community resources, & budget. It is a program that can be used year after year - without any further cost! "GIVE READING A CHANCE is a thorough & ambitious program, & one that certainly deserves emulation."--Jim Trelease, Author of THE PARENT'S READ-ALOUD HANDBOOK.Butherus, Cindy is the author of 'Give Reading a Chance : A Read-at-Home Program' with ISBN 9780945557012 and ISBN 0945557019.
