Food Assistance Options for Improving Nutrition for Older Americans

Many older persons cannot consistently obtain a nutritious diet, particularly if their income is near the poverty level. The Congress has authorized a number of programs to help provide nutrition assistance to low-income households, including those with older persons. This report looks at 4 of these programs: The Food Stamp Program, the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), the Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP), & the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). The report: (1) determines why some older persons do not use these programs; & (2) identifies strategies that could be used to increase participation in these programs.
