Freelance writer and photographer Michael Lanza is Northwest Editor of Backpacker magazine and writes a monthly column and other articles for AMC Outdoors; his work has also appeared in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and numerous other publications, and he is the author of three other guidebooks. An avid backpacker, climber, cyclist, and skier, he has hiked extensively in the western United States as well as New England, where he first began hiking.
