Christopher Edward Empson (1900-1987) was born in the town of Bridlington of Yorkshire, England. After his graduation from preparatory school, he was sent to Osborneard Darthmouth where he joined the English fleet. He spent the last two years of the First World War as a midshipman. After the end of the war, having heard so much about Uruguay, where his father had lived for eight years, Empson resigned from the service and without a word of Spanish, sailed for the country. He lived for the next thirty years amongst the Gauchos, first as an apprentice in an estancia Los Merinos and later as the landowner of the estancia El Retiro in the department of Rio Negro on the Uruguay River in the Eastern part of the country.Empson, Christopher is the author of 'Far Horizons Thirty Years Among the Gauchos of Uruguay', published 2002 under ISBN 9789051706321 and ISBN 9051706324.
