To me poetry should open a window into all that is around us, pushing us to see” life in fresh and exciting ways. A photograph of a tree can invoke excitement and peace. An ordinary object can, if photographed right, speak a wordless knowledge that transmits a feeling that makes the object seem to have a life beyond the limits of a flat piece of paper. As mathematics can reveal the invisible mysteries of nature, so can poetry. The wonders are here, under our nose. The poet, the photographer, and the mathematician can draw them out. I believe by the use of metaphors or describing the beauty around us in terms of experience, we can penetrate the deeps to take the brain beyond its point of understanding, which leads to a heart-implied construct, viewing the smallest thing in its largest purpose and meaning. As the photographer shows us an ordinary everyday object that is no longer ordinary, like a newborn baby first sees a red ball—his eyes get big because of the awe” of this red thing in front of him—poetry should bring us back to the awe” and make us snap out of the everyday boring view of Oh, that’s just a red ball.”Ginn, David is the author of 'Butterfly Eggs ', published 2005 under ISBN 9781413789171 and ISBN 141378917X.
