Concern with the problem of communication avoidance and anxiety has been present in communication and psychological literature for the past century. Booklets and articles on the subject have appeared previously, but this is the first book to draw together the major conceptual, methodological, and research approaches. The editors delayed their book for several years until they felt that the various streams of research had achieved sufficient maturity to enable useful distinctions to be made. Their goal was to provide a clear enunciation, in a single volume, of the differing views on communication avoidance. The editorial policy allowed leading scholars to present contending approaches to the problem: three from communication (communication apprehension, reticence, and transitory audience anxiety) and one from psychology (shyness). The book is divided into five parts, of which the fifth is unique for this type of book in that it is concerned with the implications of all the work that has been done in the field. It is authored by two scholars from widely differing backgrounds, who use their experience to put the efforts of hundreds of researchers and writers into perspective. The bibliography is the most extensive available in this area of research.Daly, John A. is the author of 'Avoiding Communication: Shyness, Reticence, and Communication Apprehension - John A. Daly - Hardcover' with ISBN 9780803921733 and ISBN 080392173X.
