Animal Rights

The relationship between people and animals goes back to the dawn of human civilization, yet it is only since the last century or so that we have truly begun to question that relationship. Only after the publication of Peter Singer's seminal 1975 work, Animal Liberation, did a growing number of activists come to believe that other species deserve equal rights to freedom and self-determination. Toward this end, so-called "animal liberationists" have sought to prevent what they believe are humanity's crimes of cruelty and enslavement against animals. They seek to ban the use of animals in scientific research, agriculture, and entertainment. But is the goal of harmony and noninterference among different species really achievable, or is this the overly idealistic ambition of a small cluster of people who are trying to dictate to others how to eat, play, and research new medical treatments?
