The first acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases were reported in the United States a quarter of a century ago. Since that time, AIDS has become the world's leading cause of death among both men and women between the ages of 15 and 59. In recent years, new drug treatments have decreased mortality rates by 70 percent and enabled those infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to stay relatively healthy and symptom free for years. Despite such advances, however, 40,000 new HIV infections are reported in the United States annually. These disproportionately affect minorities and women.
