African Historiographies: What History for Which Africa?

The history of Black Africa provides a striking example of how knowledge of the past affects our understanding of the present, and how historical epistemology influences our attitudes toward political and social institutions. The study of African history has largely been conducted by Western scholars or African scholars trained in the West. In recent years, however, the lack of an indigenous historiography has been to some extent corrected. A new generation of Africanists trained in African universities has worked on developing their own historiography.
